This spring, Rotary Rotorua Passport proudly unveiled a vibrant new outdoor playscape at Rotorua Hospital’s Children’s Ward — a space transformed through colour, creativity, and community generosity. Thanks to the success of our winter trailer raffle, our club has contributed $9,000 of funds to commission a mural on the concrete wall, a BBQ table where whānau can gather and spend time together, and an array of practical and educational play equipment requested by the hospital children’s team. From trikes and toy kitchens to a basketball hoop and boxed games, each item was chosen to spark imagination and movement for tamariki and whānau in their care.
The mural’s imagery, designed and painted by talented artists Marc Spijkerbosch and Helen English, holds deep significance to the Bay of Plenty coastline and the Rotorua lakes and surrounds. By depicting sea animals, native bird life, bush and lakes, the artists have woven together elements that reflect the natural beauty and unique environment of our region. These motifs not only create a visually striking space but also foster a sense of belonging and connection for local families, inviting them to see their own landscape celebrated within the hospital grounds.
On Wednesday 29th October, President Dane and club members gathered with senior Children’s Ward staff Michelle and Jenny to present the completed project — a moment of shared pride and heartfelt thanks. Special recognition goes to Lynne Joseph and Byron McRae for leading this initiative with vision, warmth, and tireless dedication.
This project is a testament to what can be achieved when community, creativity, and compassion come together. It’s more than a playscape — it’s a place for healing, laughter, and connection.
